SPRINGFIELD, Ore. --Lane County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue and the Eugene Emerald Valley Rotary Club held their 9th annual life jacket exchange Saturday.

They invited the community to bring their childrens' life jackets to the Cabellas in Springfield to be adjusted to fit properly or to exchange if they have outgrown it.

They also asked for donations because they say they are always in need of life jackets which LCSO Search and Rescue Coordinator Tim Chase says are literal life savers.

"Having and wearing your life jacket is just incredibly important when you're out on the boats and the lakes and rivers in the county," said Chase.  "But it also needs to fit properly and if it's too big it can slide up and not do you any good - if it's too small it might not have enough flotation."

He said they saw a couple hundred people come through to check in and get their children's life jackets fitting correctly.

He wants to remind the community especially as summer heats up that life jackets are very important for anyone spending time on or near the water, but especially so for children

The event will happen again Sunday at Cabella's in Springfield from 11 A.M. until 3 P.M.
