SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- The Springfield Police Department K9 Unit has canceled its annual police dog competition, citing COVID-19 concerns.

This is the second year in a row it has been canceled. The competition was originally scheduled for June 19 at Silke Field.

Each year police dogs from around the state compete in timed events that include both the dog and the handler. Events include an agility course, area search, handler protection, fastest dog and suspect apprehension.

Proceeds from the event go toward purchasing the Springfield K-9 Unit’s dogs, equipment, and training.
