ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Students at Joseph Lane Middle School in Roseburg participated in the third annual Water Rocket Competition Wednesday.

This competition is the result of a three-week-long science, technology, engineering and math curriculum known as STEM, or STEAM to include art.

Students learn the science behind making these rockets and build them using their own designs.

Sixth grader Elias Malak said his rocket, the Flying Falcon 360, had some rough patches at first, but he got the last laugh.

“I think the most fun was watching people make fun of me because of how it exploded, and how I proved them wrong once I actually went the highest one,” Malak said.

Skylar Pinsondumm, another sixth grader, said she enjoyed learning the different aspects that make these rockets fly.

“(Joseph Lane teacher Matt Hall) taught us about engineering and design, he taught us that we need to work on changing our variables to see what works best, and we learned about Newton’s three laws, and how they apply to rockets,” Pinsondumm said.

Each class held their own competitions before Wednesday's finals.

Eight finalists were selected, and the kids will find out the results at school on Thursday.
