EUGENE, Ore. -- Clematis is a popular garden plant that will deliver bountiful flowers all summer -- the trick is pruning it.

Caleb Johnson, owner of Johnson Brothers Garden Market, says there are three classes of clematis, and it's important to identify which type you have before you prune.

"Class 1 bloom on old growth. So, you don't want to prune them in early spring or winter because you are pruning out the blooms for the summer. You want to prune those right after they are done blooming, and you don't want to take out the big stems because the big stems are the life blood for the old growth," Johnson said.

Class 2 bloom on new and old wood. Johnson recommends cutting this type of clematis closer to the ground. Class 2 clematis typically bush out and provide ample blooms.

"Class 3 clematis bloom on new growth. So basically, wherever you stop pruning is where the new growth is going to come out and that's where the flowers are going to come out," Johnson added.

Johnson Brothers Garden Market is located at 91444 Coburg Road in Eugene.
