In The Garden: Repotting house plants

The first step to replanting is picking the right-sized container.

EUGENE, Ore. -- House plants need room to grow or else they can become root-bound. Caleb Johnson, owner of Johnson Brothers Garden Market, offered simple transplanting steps for anyone with house plants.

"A lot of times people replant house plants in the wintertime, but actually the summertime is a really great time to do it because the plant is growing, there's more sunlight and you have less chance of overwatering," Johnson said.

The first step to replanting is picking the right sized container.

"You want to see if you have a drainage hole. If it does not have a drainage hole, I highly recommend that you put some charcoal in the bottom. That's going to do provide filtration for water and for odor," Johnson added.

Next up, add soil and then the plant. Johnson recommends loosening the roots first. Don't forget to water and add fertilizer.

Johnson Brothers Garden Market is located at 91444 Coburg Road in Eugene.
