COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- Oregon Department of Forestry crews are making progress on a wildfire near Cottage Grove that's burned a couple of acres.
ODF officials said the fire was initially reported at 11:15 a.m. Thursday. They said the fire is on ODF-protected land on a steep and hilly area just two miles south of Cottage Grove. Officials said the fire was not threatening to any structures.
KEZI spoke with Sarah Johnson, a Cottage Grove resident who was watching several ODF helicopters dumping and collecting water from the nearby Cottage Grove Lake as quickly as they could. She said she is thankful for their efforts in keeping them safe.
"We really need to appreciate all those people who put their lives on the line,” Johnson said. "They're very lucky that we have the Cottage Grove Lake right here. It's fun to see them coming in here. We don't normally see that."
ODF officials said the Douglas Forest Association is also assisting them with the fire.
Officials said they plan on being out at the fire throughout Thursday evening and said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
