SPRINGFIELD, Ore. --Police shot and killed a man in the parking lot of Best Buy on Gateway Street Saturday afternoon.
Springfield police say they were called to the parking lot around 3:30 p.m. after multiple reports of a disorderly subject damaging cars in the parking lot.
Police say the suspect's actions forced officers to use deadly force.
Richard Townsend was in the parking lot when the confrontation began.
"By the time we park the car, he's on up on top of his hood, just getting busy on the windshield. Police show up on scene. I see that he's on top still and they order him to get down," he said. "They have him triangulated. Two flanked and one in the front and they are demanding orders that he do something."
Townsend went inside the store. He said by the time he came out, the man was dead.
The name of the involved officer is not being released at this time, nor is the name of the suspect. However, an employee of a nearby motel said he was familiar with the man who was shot.
The Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team is investigating the shooting.
