EUGENE, Ore. -- If you live in the valleys, it’s time to find ways to stay cool when hot temperatures hit the area Tuesday.

A Heat Advisory will be in effect Tuesday and Wednesday. Residents can expect highs in the 90s and 100s inland both days, and highs in the mid-80s and low 90s on Thursday.

Along the Coast, temperatures will be near 80 degrees on Tuesday and back to normal by Wednesday, in the mid-60s.

We have a chance to break records on Tuesday:

  • Eugene: 94 (1940)
  • Roseburg: 102 (1940)
  • North Bend: 72 (1936)

We could also break records on Wednesday:

  • Eugene: 89 (2002)
  • Roseburg: 97 (2002)

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

If possible, people should limit time outside to the morning and late evening.

If you have elderly neighbors, stop by to check in on them.

Be sure to drink plenty of water, and don’t leave pets or kids in cars.

Eugene police warn pet owners that temperatures can rise inside a vehicle quickly and can cause an animal to experience heat stroke or brain damage, even with the windows slightly open and the vehicle parked under shade. Signs of heat stroke include:

  • Restlessness
  • Excessive thirst
  • Heavy panting
  • Lethargy
  • Lack of appetite
  • Dark tongue
  • Vomiting
  • Lack of coordination

If your animal is showing signs of heat exhaustion, consult your veterinarian immediately.

Police said if you see an animal in distress or unresponsive in a parked car, call 911.
