LANE COUNTY-- Last week the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a recommendation that people wear face masks in public settings.

On Monday, Lane County announced two new cases:

  • One man in his 40s in Eugene-Springfield area who is currently at home
  • One woman in her 40s outside the Eugene-Springfield area who is currently at home

One new case was announced by Douglas County.

As health officials search for the best ways to flatten the curve, Dr. Patrick Luedtke with Lane County Public Health said that this is a step to protect yourself and others around you who may be more at risk.

“If you find yourself in a place where you are elbow to elbow with someone, perhaps at a checkout or grocery store, there may be benefit to using a mask there," Luedtke said. "I wish we had better science to say it's absolutely of benefit, but considering its use is something we are recommending now."

Experts want to make it clear that this is not a substitute for social distancing. While wearing a mask does not make you immune to catching the virus, it will play a role in preventing the spread.

“The use of a mask in the community during these high level transmissions is probably of some benefit, especially if you cannot maintain social distancing," Luedtke said.

Officials said that members of the community should not rush to buy medical masks because there is a shortage of protective gear in the health care field.
