EUGENE, Ore. -- A group called the East Grandstand Supporters held a community meeting on Saturday to discuss why they feel the east grandstand at Hayward Field needs to be preserved.

Their goal for the meeting was to show people why they feel the grandstand should be retained, rehabilitated, and integrated into the Hayward Field renovation plans.

About 50 people showed up to the meeting in support of preserving the historic structure.

Including former UO Men's and Women's coach, Peter Thompson.

"I feel my expertise is trying to preserve what Eugene is," said Thompson. "Trying to preserve track and field in Eugene. And I think that if we implement what is planned, we will almost certainly destroy track and field in Eugene."

Organizers said they will be pursuing legal action to halt the renovation plans in an effort to integrate the east grandstands.
