SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- Eighth graders at Hamlin Middle School learned how to create their own source of energy by building wind turbines.
The students designed, measured, cut and glued the entire turbine, starting with the blades. The heavier the blades, the harder it turns. Some students learned that the hard way.
Building wind turbines is just one of the science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics projects students at the Springfield school take on to learn new skills.
“If we don’t get a college degree, we can still figure out how to do things fairly easily like mechanics and woodwork,” student Jason Wilcox said. “It’d probably be a good first job, manual labor and stuff.”
