EUGENE, Ore., -- With Halloween right around the corner, Eugene Police want to make sure everyone stays safe.

Margaret Mazotta, a crime prevention specialist with the Eugene Police Department, suggested going to venues already set up for trick-or-treaters, like malls and shopping centers in the area.

However, she said if parents or children wanted to go the more traditional route and trick-or-treat in a neighborhood, it is important to be careful.

"If possible, try to go to neighbors that you know. Make sure you know the folks already or make sure they're family or friends or that sort of thing,” Mazotta said. “If you do go door-to-door, we recommend you respect if people have the light off. Try not to go to those houses, that is usually a signal that they're not prepared to have trick-or-treaters."

Mazotta said it is important to avoid costumes that make it difficult to be seen. She also said it is a good idea to avoid wearing costumes or masks that are difficult to see out of.

She said Eugene Police will be handing out reflective treat bags.
