EUGENE, Ore. – A Eugene organization is planning on making an even bigger difference after they received a half-million dollar donation Wednesday morning.

Susan Ban, the Executive Director for ShelterCare, said they are very thankful for the generous gift from Kaiser Permanente and PeaceHealth.

Ban said the two organizations donated nearly $590,000 to their Transitional Housing Project. The program helps homeless people in the community who are battling severe mental illness find permanent housing.

She said with the donation they will be able to serve nearly 40 people and offer 20 apartments. She also said two community health workers will be able to help each person get connected with the right health and housing resources.

Cindy Williams has been using ShelterCare program for the last couple of years. She believes the donation will make a positive impact on the community.

"Without ShelterCare I really had nothing,” said Cindy Williams. “I was hopeless, I just wanted to die. I didn’t know how to be anything other than what I was, and now today I am able to give back to the community, I’m part of the community."

Ban said the program plans to house their participants within six months to a year.

They expect to start the program in January 2018.
