EUGENE, Ore. -- The Down to Earth Home, Garden and Gift store hosted a talk Saturday about the new economic opportunities for growing hemp in Oregon.

The store welcomed guest speaker Sunny Summers, the director of the Oregon Department of Agriculture Hemp Program, to answer important questions for interested growers.

Carly Boyer is the Community Outreach and Event Coordinator for the Down to Earth Home, Garden and Gift store.

‘We wanted to have her here, because a lot of our customers grow hemp in a variety of scales,” Boyer said. “Some are a few acres, and some are more.”

Boyer said that with the changes in law and legality, there are many questions about how the permitting process works.

“I’d like them to know that Oregon has a hemp program, to have a basic understanding of what we require and to know what changes are happening at the national level,” Summers said.

Summers said that in 2019 there were over 1900 registered hemp growers in Oregon. She emphasized the importance of becoming registered under the Oregon Department of Agriculture if you plan to grow hemp.

“Knowing from one of the state’s best sources is exceptional and will help people to really know what’s going on with hemp in Oregon,” Boyer said.

The Oregon House voted on Friday to approve House Bill 4051, which is now headed to the Senate. This would create the Oregon Hemp Commission.
