SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A local group is aiming to significantly lower the number of accidents and fatalities on our roadways with the Oregon Friendly Driver program.

It's a statewide program that aims to educate all those who use the road: bikers, walkers and drivers alike.

The Safe Lane Transportation Coalition is putting on the class.

"(The class) aims at educating all road users on the safest way that we can interact on the roadway," said Drew Pfefferle, who works with the coalition.

He said they teach things like how a biker can merge properly into traffic and also how drivers can work with bikers to make the road safer for everyone.

According to the Oregon Department of Transportation, in 2017 more than 1000 pedestrians and more than 750 bicyclists were killed in motor vehicle accidents.

But the Safe Lane Coalition is not sitting idly by. They're hoping to educate everyone who uses the road and save lives.

"In Eugene and Springfield there's a lot of bicycle infrastructure that people that have been driving for 30 years might not know how to interact with," said Pfefferle. "So this is just a great class to teach people the ways how to share the road."

Mark Riddle with the library said they host events like this all the time in an effort to address the community's most pressing needs.

"There's been a a lot of talk about safety in the community and we're always trying to offer programs that reflect the community interest," said Riddle. "When they contacted us, we were more than willing to offer them a venue, some advertising and support."

The event begins at 6 p.m. Sept. 9 at the Springfield Public Library and is free to the whole community.
