SPRINGFIELD Ore. -- Good Samaritans across Lane County have been dropping off supplies at Thurston High School for evacuees of the Holiday Farm Fire.

As Red Cross volunteers connected evacuees to resources inside the school, outside hundreds of community members arrived throughout the day with unsolicited donations of water, food, clothes and toys in tow.

"This parking lot was packed with families with children and pets and animals, and I started making live video feeds on my Facebook page asking people to please come down, bring food, bring water," said Springfield resident Mark Molina.

According to the Red Cross, these donations can be overwhelming.

"We are very helpful that people want to help due to the Oregon wildfires, but for the safety of everybody right now we are unable to accept material donations of any kind. This is a very quick-moving situation so we are still evaluating what those needs are," said spokesperson Chad Carter.

According to Carter, evacuees who arrive at the school are being handled on a case-by-case basis, and being connected with resources unique to their situations. For that reason, monetary donations help keep the Red Cross flexible in the aid they are able to give.

"What that allows us to do is immediately put that generous gift into action and funnel it exactly where those needs are greatest at the time," Carter said.

Monetary donations can be designated for the Cascades region, but not for the victims of a specific fire, according to Carter.

As for the donations outside, volunteers said that a local church will help distribute the supplies.
