ROSEBURG, OR. -- It’s oral cancer awareness month, and you can get your mouth checked for cancer for free at Umpqua Community College.

The Bonnie J Ford Health, Nursing, and Science Center will be hosting free screenings for anyone that is able to attend.

Doctor Alexis Atchinson will be using the building’s state of the art facilities for the event.

Officials said despite common belief, anyone can get oral cancer, whether they’re smokers or not.

Tamara Loosli from the UCC Dental Lab said, “But also, people who use chewing tobacco, who vape, alcohol use, HPV – all of these things are contributing risk factors with oral cancer. Also, we’re seeing a population that’s getting oral cancer that doesn’t have any specific, significant risk factors.”

The event is tomorrow from 10:00 to 3:00, and it should only take about 10 minutes to get in and out.
