EUGENE, Ore. -- After a string of break-ins near the University of Oregon’s campus and surrounding areas, members of the community are joining together to combat the ongoing crime problem.

Today kicked off the first day of foot patrols for the area of Broadway and Patterson Street, bringing an extra level of security for the campus and members of the community. This new measure was a joint effort between the University of Oregon, Eugene Wake Up and UO sororities.

Tatem Tangvald and Jessica Dominguez are sophomores at the University of Oregon and members of Alpha Phi sorority. After a recent break-in at their sorority house, they said that the foot patrol system brings them more peace of mind about walking around campus.

“The biggest issue is definitely us walking home at night,” Tangvald said. “People are really good about if they see you walking by yourself, coming to take you home or just making sure you're not alone because they know that it is scary."

Students told KEZI that the drug problem so close to where they live is also concerning.

“Our house mom told us that she’s found around twelve needles right outside the back of our door,” Dominguez said.

Members of the campus community have been advised to refrain from walking alone at night and to utilize options such as the bus or Safe Ride, a free service offered to University of Oregon students, faculty and staff.

“It’s nice to know that there are cops walking around that have our backs in those situations,” Tangvald said.

Patrols will take place around UO Greek houses and the Elk Horn Brewery.
