SPRINGFIELD, Ore. -- A fire in Springfield spread to three homes Monday morning.

Fire officials said the blaze started around 3:30 a.m. in a detached garage. The flames spread to the house on same the property. The people inside the home got out safely.

Fire filled the attic and drifted to a neighboring house to the east. Flames also spread across the backyard of the first home to the back fence. Another home to the south caught on fire.

Three structures in all were burned.

"This was a very difficult fire for us to combat," Battalion Chief Scott Bishop said. "Access was tough. It's an older area of town and the streets aren't terribly wide."

No one was injured. Fire officials are investigating to determine how the fire started.
