EUGENE, Ore. -- The pandemic has taken a drastic toll on jobs, leaving millions wondering what’s next.
While the road ahead may look uncertain, there are local jobs with immediate openings.
“With everything going on, it’s really hard to keep staff and to have enough people on,” said ampm cashier Jay Haser. “We’re always looking for somebody.”
The ampm store is currently hiring, along with other convenience stores and grocery stores such as CVS, Safeway and Fred Meyer.
“If you’re looking to work and you’re willing to take on some of the risk, there’s plenty of work working as cashiers all over the area,” Haser said. “There’s a lot of need in what’s being called essential workers right now.”
FedEx is also filling positions and searching for workers to load and unload packages.
RiverBend Materials is hiring drivers in the Eugene area, as well as other positions both locally and statewide.
“It's got to be folks that respect that we are going to do it the right way and will honor that,” said KC Klosterman with RiverBend Materials.
Klosterman said that hiring drivers has been the most difficult type of recruitment for the company.
“Just finding people that are ready to go back to work,” Klostermnan said. “Some of us, you know, might still have some reservations about the safety of it and so we don't want to ask anybody to do anything that they're uncomfortable with.”
The minimum wage in Eugene is currently $11.25 an hour. Beginning in July, the minimum wage for all of Oregon will be increased.
