SWEET HOME, Ore. -- A farmer saved the day Monday night after he heard two people calling for help on the South Santiam River.

Kurt Clark was working on his fence when he spotted a man and woman stranded on an island near Bates Bridge. Firefighters in Sweet Home said their inflatable raft had popped. Clark went back to his house, grabbed his canoe and paddled downriver in the dark.

Once he located the pair, he took them downstream to a riverbank and then across the river where they were able to meet up with rescue crews.

They were not hurt and friends picked them up and drove them back to Corvallis.
