ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Douglas County human trafficking experts are speaking out about the California man who was arrested for alleged human trafficking in Roseburg Thursday.

Maurice Hurth, 41, was in court Friday. He is facing 12 felonies including kidnapping, trafficking, involuntary servitude and using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct.

An officer from the Roseburg Police Department came in contact with Hurth around 4 a.m. in the Roseburg airport after they allegedly found him in a car with three teenage girls. He was arrested on warrants from San Francisco, Fairfield and Solano, Calif.

Officials say the officer suspected the teenagers were being trafficked.

Marion Pearson, the violence prevention specialist for the Douglas County Human Trafficking Task Force, said this arrest is a win for Douglas County.

Her organization educates the community about recognizing the signs of human trafficking and advocates for survivors.

“For us, it really energizes to do even more work in the community,” said Pearson.

Officials have also confirmed that Patrick Moore was the officer on patrol the night of the incident. They said he was the first person to come in contact with Hurth after he thought the car looked suspicious. They say he was in the right place at the right time.

“If that officer hadn’t been out patrolling, and he hadn’t noticed this vehicle, there would’ve been nothing else that would’ve led us to that,” said Sgt. Jeff Eichenbusch.

According to the Solano District Attorney’s Office, located in North California, Hurth was found guilty for assaulting his infant child’s mother in 2016.
