EUGENE, Ore. -- The expanded smoking ban for downtown Eugene went into effect Friday.

The zone stretches from Lincoln Street to Pearl and 8th Avenue through Broadway, 10th and some of West 11th Avenue.

Property owners within the no-smoking expansion have the option to opt out of the ordinance, while businesses outside of the downtown core can opt in.

Eugene local West Hovland compared the new smoking ban to the recently passed dog ban.

“I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of enforcement at first, but then after a while it’ll probably get relaxed and things will kind of go back to quote normal ... as normal as they have been in downtown Eugene for the past couple of years," Hovland said.

Eugene resident Qusey Dallas said the city needs to consider that everyone has the right to enjoy themselves in their own way.

"I see people drinking Diet Coke and eating McDonald's cheeseburgers, and I don't go and tell them, 'Don't you do that,' because it's not my job ... not my right to control someone's biochemistry," Dallas said.

The Eugene police said first time offenders will be fined between $50 to $100 and will face stricter fines for repeated actions.

This expanded no smoking ban also includes e-cigarettes and vaporizers.
