EUGENE, Ore. – The ex-wife of a man who shot three people last week on Anthony Way before killing himself said she’s shocked by his death, but not surprised he turned to violence.

Vania Wheeler was married to Carlos Alberto Angelo, the man behind Wednesday’s shooting, for about a year in the 1990s. Wheeler said the short-lived relationship was fraught with tension.

“He could get very mean very fast,” Wheeler said. “He was very disturbed.”

Wheeler recalls moments where Angelo would get angry with her for loading the dishwasher in a way he didn’t like.

She said Angelo was "very particular with his stuff and very (obsessive),” Wheeler said.

So when Wheeler learned Angelo shot three of his neighbors over a dispute involving a leaf blower last week, she said she was not surprised.

“I was shocked. Not so much surprised, but I was very shocked,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler suspects Angelo may have been suffering from a mental illness and recalls her ex-husband owning multiple firearms.

“I don’t like guns, and he was very crazy about it. He used to carry a gun everywhere he goes,” Wheeler said.

Wheeler said she was scared of Angelo at times, and her fears ultimately led to the end of their marriage. She said Angelo mostly kept to himself and she doesn’t recall him having many friends.

Wheeler has not had contact with Angelo in decades.

“It’s very sad,” Wheeler said.
