EUGENE, Ore.-- City staff revealed various options for road improvements in three areas across downtown Eugene, asking for public input at an open house on Tuesday night.

The Central Eugene in Motion project entered its next phase as city staff presented residents with potential road improvements on 8th Avenue, midtown Willamette Street, and the Amazon to riverfront area. The options were derived from previous public input collected at the project's first open house, and are focused on improving accessibility to bikers, walkers and more.

"Tonight we are showing them what we heard them say. So what we are going to hear after tonight is if we did a good job or not. Or if we provided the alternative we thought was going to be best," said the city of Eugene's bicycle and pedestrian planner Reed Dunbar.

The various options include improvements like adding bike lanes, adding or removing on-street parking or reducing travel lanes. For each area, participants picked their favorite option. Residents will also be able to participate online on Engage Eugene starting Wednesday.

University of Oregon professor Marc Schlossberg was in attendance at the open house. He said that the public input method has both benefits and drawbacks.

"To some degree, we've already participated as a community in that process, so open houses like this are a bit redundant or have the potential to delay ," he said. "On the other hand, when we engage the community in a process like this, maybe it builds more momentum."

City planners will take public input into account as they select the preferred options, which will be unveiled at the next open house on January 15.
