EUGENE, Ore. -- One of Eugene Police Department's K9s is making a name for itself after helping catch two suspects just this month alone.

K9 Cwyk is a two-year-old German shepherd who has been on the force since late November.

The dog has accomplished a lot since he joined the force. On Feb. 7, Cwyk was able to help police arrest a burglary suspect in west Eugene.

Cwyk made another capture earlier this month, when officers responded to an assault along Highway 99. Police said the suspect took off running when he saw police, and Cwyk was able to pick his scent and find the suspect hiding in the bushes.

The K9's partner, officer Rob Griesel, said Cwyk’s skills play a valuable role for their department.

"His primary function is tracking and trailing, following scent to a source,” Griesel said. “Whether that's a person hiding, person who has fled or a missing person who has wondered off, or a lost item, discarded gun, or knife for something that's used in a crime. Those are kind of his area of expertise in finding."

Griesel said Cwyk will continue to serve and protect the community for years to come.
