EUGENE, Ore. -- A State Farm insurance office in west Eugene is fed up with homeless people camping on their front porch and leaving a hazardous mess behind.

Rob Olive manages the insurance office on W. 18th Avenue and Chambers Street, and he said this problem has only gotten worse.

"The most frustrating part of this whole thing has been the level of angst we feel over showing up in the morning and wondering what we are going to find," Olive said.

Just this week he found human feces near the front door to his office. Olive said he’s looking for some sort of change because he and his employees are at a breaking point.

Recently, Olive said he had a scary encounter with a group of three transients. He said he asked the group to quiet down, but after the third time, he threatened to call the police. That's when they became violent.

"They were banging on the door, throwing objects at the glass, spitting all over the outside of the building, screaming obscenities and threats," Olive said. "Threats as in, 'I'll kill you.'"

There are times when Olive said his employees will ask people that are camping outside his building to move and they do clean up after themselves, but most of the time he finds needles, spoons, food, and other trash. All of this can harm his business.

Olive said his landlord is very understanding and is trying to solve the issue by installing fences around the building.

Moving forward, Olive has reached out to his councilor, Greg Evans, who forwarded Olive’s email to the Eugene Police Department. Olive said he’s happy that people are listening to his concerns.

"I'm encouraged by the response I received in the last 24 hours, but something absolutely has to be done by the city of Eugene," Olive said.
