EUGENE, Ore. -- Artists in Eugene will be painting murals downtown on storm drains this weekend to serve as a reminder about protecting local waterways and wildlife.

The city’s first “UpStream Art Project” is based on a similar Springfield project and will consist of four murals.

Officials said the project will help show that storm drains are connected to the river and the importance of minimizing our impact by returning clean water to the rivers. Stormwater flows untreated from our streets to those waterways.

Asante Riverwind, one of the artists chosen to participate, said he’s hoping it can call attention to something many people often forget about.

“I hope at one point it reminds them of their connection and their importance as part of the whole weave of life because everyone has something to contribute,” Riverwind said.

Riverwind said it’s important that everyone does their part to preserve our waterways.

The other artists are Kelle DeForest, Katherine Wing and Megan Wyma. The four were chosen following a call to artists to submit their vision of a clean rivers message, with the theme of “Clean Rivers Start Here.”

Riverwind, DeForest, Wing and Wyma began painting Friday morning and will wrap up early Saturday afternoon. The paintings will be located in the downtown area at the following locations:

  • Willamette Street near East 10th Avenue
  • Willamette Street near West 7th Avenue
  • Oak Street near West 7th Avenue
  • West 8th Avenue near East Park Street

The four locations will be cordoned off to provide a safe work space but will be visible to those curious about the project.
