EUGENE, Ore -- From drugs to sex crimes, the Eugene Police Department's new Street Crimes Unit (SCU) had a busy first week.

Spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said the unit, which is made up of six team members, arrested two people during the March 12 operation on 2566 Willona Drive. McLaughlin said that residence had had 93 calls for service since 2010, including 81 calls since the current owners moved in.

McLaughlin said the SCU then assisted Special Investigations detectives working a sting regarding child prostitution. A man later identified as Steven Pajela Deleon-Guerrero, 34, of Springfield responded to a posting made by the detective and was arrested for online sexual corruption of a child and possession of a firearm.

"The nice thing about our team is we're able to be detached from the radio," said Sgt. Mike Ware of the SCU. "We're going to be able to go out and have time to work the problem and get the appropriate resources to solve certain issues that a regular patrol officer may not able to do."

Then on March 13, McLaughlin said with the assistance of a detective, a SCU officer worked to arrest a suspect on warrants after developing probable cause for prostitution. In addition to the pending prostitution charge, she is facing charges of felon in possession of a restricted weapon, possession of a controlled substance (schedule IV) and heroin possession.

On March 15, two SCU officers conducted a traffic stop of a suspicious vehicle and contacted David Charles Miner, age 38, of Eugene, who a detective was seeking regarding the 2018 burglary of a home under construction, McLaughlin said. While taking Miner into custody, officers spotted a methamphetamine pipe in plain view inside his vehicle. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of meth under the driver's seat, McLaughlin said. Miner was charged with second-degree burglary, first-degree theft, unlawful possession of a controlled substance (felony), driving while suspended and driving uninsured.

McLaughlin said the SCU also made a handful of warrant arrests during the week, gathered information on future problem areas to address and recovered an unoccupied stolen vehicle.
