EUGENE, Ore. -- Drivers should plan for multiple road closures along the Eugene Marathon and 5K route over the weekend. Police said they will also have increased security to keep everyone safe.

For the 5K on Saturday police said the roads will close at 7:30 a.m. and open back up around 10 a.m. For Sunday's marathon roads will close at 6:30 a.m. along the route, primarily around the University of Oregon campus and South Eugene area. Police said the roads should open back up around noon.

Police said they will have officers directing traffic but it is best to avoid the area if possible.

Lt. Eric Klinko said for the marathon there will be more than 20 officers in the area and they will be working with a bomb team, two bomb dogs and a National Guard Team from Salem who specializes in these types of events. Officers from the University of Oregon and Springfield Police will also help.

"I think the big thing is to be patient. If you are a motorist in the area recognize there will be some delays, and I know that can be frustrating but please be patient and we will do our best to get you where you want to get in a timely manner, " Klinko said. "And then if you see something suspicious say something, whether it's a suspicious device or someone who is acting in a suspicious manner, by all means, let us know."

Klinko said they are taking more security measures than they have in the past, but said it is just a precaution.

He said there will still be normal police staffing for the rest of the city over the weekend.
