EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene Mission is celebrating another success story after they received a handwritten letter from a man who says he stayed at their facility 10 years ago.

Staff say the letter came as a pleasant surprise in the mail last week.

In the letter, the man writes that he lived on the streets for a month before making his way to the Eugene Mission. He struggled with an alcohol addiction, and the Mission helped him recover, the letter says.

It also says he’s 11 years sober, a homeowner and is married. He claims the Eugene Mission is the reason for his new outlook on life.

Sheryl Balthrop, the executive director of the Mission, says this letter is a representation of how much of an impact their organization makes on hundreds of homeless people in Lane County.

"It was just very encouraging for us,” said Balthrop. “He explained how the environment here at the Eugene Mission allowed him to make those life changes that he needed to make."

Balthrop said she’s unable to share the man’s name due to privacy reasons.
