EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Civic Alliance will break ground on Civic Park within the next several weeks, with an official ceremony marking the event scheduled for Oct. 7.

Officials with the nonprofit say they are waiting for final permits from the city before bulldozers can move in. Construction fencing in the area should be up soon, they added.

The sports complex will be built on the property of the old Civic Stadium which burned down in 2015.

Carly Demanett with the Alliance said the group has raised $21.3 million so far to make the sports complex happen.

Construction will take place in phases, with phase one featuring the KIDSPORTS Fieldhouse, a parking lot, a turf field and 1,000 bleacher seats.

Demanett said they are asking the public to join them during the ceremonial groundbreaking in October and are asking the public to bring a shovel so they can celebrate with them.

She said she expects close to 3,000 people to attend.
