Eugene City Council receives update on cost of new city hall

City staff gave a presentation on the cost for the project during Tuesday night's work session.

EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene City Councilors heard updates on their City Hall and Town Square projects on Tuesday evening.

City staff told councilors they have upwards of $9.7 million in Urban Renewal funds set aside for the Park Blocks, open spaces like Kesey Square and the library plaza and the farmer's market.

As for the city hall, the cost for the project was estimated to be about $28 million in 2016.

City staff said they hope to reduce that cost or future costs through more cost-effective building materials and energy-efficient designs.

Those costs will be discussed at future meetings that will include public input.

At the end of their meeting on Tuesday night, councilors voted to enter into negotiations with EWEB to purchase their headquarters, after EWEB declared it to be surplus on November 6th.

In their motion, councilors decided to add wording saying the building wouldn't be used as a city hall, but other councilors noted that could possibly change during their five year negotiation period with EWEB.
