EUGENE, Ore. -- A month ago Microsoft announced that they are no longer providing technical assistance, software updates or bug fixes for Windows 7.

This news is leaving less tech-savvy consumers at risk of being contacted by scammers who are claiming to be with Microsoft and offering to “help” with their “expired Windows license,” said Danielle Kane with the Better Business Bureau.

“This is an impostor scam where people pretend to be Microsoft,” Kane said.

How the scam works is the scammer will claim to be from Microsoft, and they will say they can help you upgrade, but they need remote access to your computer.

“They have the ability to call you and say Windows 7 doesn’t work anymore, let me help you. Give me remote access, and I will upgrade it. So you just gave this hacker remote access to your personal information,” said Kane.

There are a few ways to protect yourself from this scam, such as do not trust unsolicited callers. The BBB says reputable companies don’t usually call consumers without their permission. Also never allow a stranger remote access to your computer. If you need help, go straight to the source. Call Microsoft tech support directly and double check you are on their official website before calling a number or sharing personal information.
