EUGENE, Ore. -- The Eugene Water and Electric Board opened its first emergency water station in Bethel Saturday morning as part of an ongoing initiative to prepare for emergencies.

EWEB spokesperson Joe Harwood said the water distribution system is run off a well with an emergency generator.

Community members said they participated in the drill Saturday because they understand the importance of being prepared.

"I know that we live in a region that's prone to some disasters like earthquakes, and it's nice to be ready and especially as we see other parts of the country struggle through floods and hurricane and those kinds of things," said Eugene resident Susan Palmer. "It's nice to remind ourselves that we need to be prepared as well."

Harwood said when it comes to preparing for emergency situations, storing water is key.

He said you should have enough water for each person in your home for at least three days.

He said Saturday's event was a good place to start.

"This was a really good drill in terms of having a resilient community being prepared for emergencies and being prepared for natural disasters because they do happen and the faster we can recover as a community, the better off we're going to be," Harwood said.

Hardwood said at least five more distribution sites will be set up around the Eugene area.

He said if disaster were to strike, the centers could be set up in less than an hour.
