EUGENE, Ore. – A man is accused of driving drunk and crashing into a parked police vehicle on Thursday.
It happened at about 2:30 a.m. at West 7th Avenue and Madison Street. The Eugene Police vehicle was parked there as officers helped with a crash that had happened at the intersection earlier.
When a sergeant noticed a Plymouth Sundance that didn’t appear to be stopping, he warned other officers in the area, who were reportedly less than 10 feet away when the vehicle skidded and rear-ended the patrol car.
At the time of the crash, no one was in the police vehicle, which had its headlights on and an amber bar light on.
Police identified the driver as Michael Baranko, 28. He was taken to the Lane County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants and reckless driving. He was cited for failure to yield to an emergency vehicle and failure to carry his driver’s license.
The suspect’s vehicle was towed from the intersection and impounded.
