Drone crash starts fire in Springfield field

Crews said the pilots of the drone were distracted and it crashed into the field.

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A drone is to blame for a field fire in Springfield, according to fire officials.

The fire at Marcola Road and 28th Street broke out around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, burning about 1/4 of an acre.

Crews said the pilots of the drone were distracted and it crashed into the field, sparking the fire.

They said the drone operators are cooperating with the investigation.

The road north of 28th Street was blocked off as crews battled the fire, but it has reopened.
