Driver flees after crashing into North Bend school bus

Police were able to locate the driver of the car using information provided by the bus driver.

NORTH BEND, Ore. – A vehicle crashed into a school bus just before 8 a.m. Wednesday near North Bay Elementary School.

The bus had just left the school and was empty except for the bus driver, who was not injured.

Capt. Gabriel Fabrizio of the Coos County Sheriff’s Office said the driver of the car fled on foot after crashing into the bus. North Bend police officers found the driver a short time later near Highway 101.

Jerald Souther, 56, was detained on suspicion of driving under the influence of intoxicants. Police were able to positively identify Souther based on information provided by the bus driver.

The crash occurred near Wildwood Lane, which is close to North Bay Elementary School.

North Bend Police Department is investigating the drunk driving charge, and the Coos County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of the crash.
