Driver crashes into tribal police vehicle on Highway 126W

The suspect reportedly made multiple attempts to crash into several police vehicles.

MAPLETON, Ore. – A driver attempted multiple times to ram into officers’ vehicles, crashing into one, on Friday, Oregon State Police said.

Police said troopers responded to Highway 126W near milepost 13 after receiving reports that someone had been driving erratically in the area.

Upon arriving, a trooper reported that the driver nearly hit him head on. The suspect turned, began following the marked vehicle and again tried to crash into the trooper, who took evasive action.

Units from the Florence Police Department and Siuslaw Tribal Police arrived, and the suspect attempted to run into the marked Florence Police vehicle before crashing head on into the tribal police vehicle.

The tribal police officer and the suspect – Layne Palmer, 60 – were transported for medical evaluation.

The investigation is ongoing.
