FLORENCE, Ore. -- After more than a month of running from law enforcement, a man suspected in a shooting in the Florence area has been caught and arrested, the Lane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Gene Joseph, 35, faces charges of first-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, felon in possession of a weapon, fourth-degree assault and menacing from an incident on July 29.

Deputies said they responded to a gunshot wound victim at Peace Harbor Hospital in Florence who had reportedly been shot in the leg earlier that day south of Florence off Highway 101. Joseph was identified as a suspect in the shooting.

Joseph was arrested Thursday night by deputies with the assistance of the Florence Police Department, Oregon State Police and Tribal Police.

Authorities said he changed his appearance significantly and was hiding in various locations in the Florence area after the shooting, including the residence he was found in.

Joseph was taken to the Lane County Jail. He was set to be arraigned on Friday.
