EUGENE, Ore. – Officials say they’ve reached an agreement with a Eugene woman who had been sentenced to death for torturing and murdering her 15-year-old daughter in 2009.

Angela McAnulty had her conviction and sentence overturned in July 2019 by a retired judge from Malheur County, who said her attorneys did not adequately represent her or advise her during her trial.

The State of Oregon appealed the decision from Senior Circuit Court Judge J. Burdette Pratt in August 2019.

Monday morning, officials announced they have reached a settlement in the case. The death penalty has been vacated, and McAnulty agreed to serve a sentence of life in prison without parole.

McAnulty also agreed to never challenge her murder conviction or sentence.

The case is one of the most notorious in modern Oregon history. Pratt noted the evidence was "particularly gruesome."

According to prosecutors, McAnulty singled out her daughter Jeanette Maples to beat and starve while allowing her other two children to eat.

McAnulty was the only woman on death row in Oregon prior to the change in sentence.
