GREEN, Ore. -- Roseburg police have identified the suspect who died in an officer-involved shooting that was caught on camera in Green on March 9.
Kristopher Haynes, 25, is believed to have been a transient at the time of his death, police said. He was likely traveling from Eugene to California.
The State Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the man’s identity using DNA comparison.
Police said the March 9 incident began around 6 p.m. when a stolen vehicle was spotted at Love’s Travel Stop on Grant Smith Road. It had been reported stolen in Eugene on March 7.
When authorities attempted to contact the driver, the car sped away, and officers followed the vehicle to a rancher’s field, where it became stuck.
During the shooting, police said the car caught fire, and afterward human remains were found inside. Due to the fire, it wasn’t possible at the time to identify Haynes.
On March 20, a Douglas County Grand Jury found that officers’ use of force was justified in the shooting, in which Douglas County deputies and an Oregon State Police trooper exchanged gunfire with Haynes.
No officers were injured.
