EUGENE, Ore. – Work crews began tearing down the East Grandstand of Hayward Field on Friday morning. Nearly the whole grandstand was torn down by 6 p.m. Friday.

Many community members hoped the grandstand would not be taken down because of its historical value. Some even protested outside the stadium on Tuesday, but to no avail.

A crowd gathered Friday to watch the demolition take place. While many were upset, some people had an optimistic outlook.

"It's out with the old and in with the new," said Douglas Seinmann, a community member.

Others shared stories of memories at the historic venue. "My two younger brothers who are in college both practiced on this field. They were involved in track and cross country so they were involved in a lot of great events there. I know it means a lot to people in Eugene," said Sarah Bania-Dobyns.

Hayward Field was built in 1919 as a football field. The East Grandstand was completed in 1925.

The major renovation of the field is expected to be completed in 2020. The renovation is being fully funded by Phil and Penny Knight and more than 50 other donors.

A university spokesperson told KEZI 9 News they are working to reuse as much material as they can.
