Crews battle "substantial" grass fire in Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. -- Fire crews from the Eugene Springfield Fire department are actively working to extinguish fast moving grass fire in West Eugene, officials said.

The fire started around 6:15 p.m.

People who live in nearby apartments were told to evacuate around 6:30 p.m. Police say it's now safe for residents who evacuated to return.

There is currently no immediate danger to any structures.

Officials said the fire is under control as of 8:55 p.m. Sunday. 

W 18th Ave. between S Bertelsen Road and Willow Creek Road will remain closed for several more hours as crews monitor the scene, police said.
