CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Corvallis school board has unanimously accepted Brandy Fortson's resignation and formally declared an open seat for an interim board member.

Around 30 people packed the board room to hear comments by the school board and provide comments of their own Tuesday night. However, Fortson was not in attendance for the meeting. Becca Meskimen, one of Fortson's supporters, said during public comment the board is missing the underlying message they were trying to communicate.

"I am concerned that the shame that director Fortson has been enduring for expressing their concerns with police and being told, like a slap on the wrist of a little child, that that was uncalled for, demeans the families in this community who are harassed," Meskimen said.

Fortson sent in a letter of resignation on Saturday after controversy over tweets calling cops "bastards" and saying that "sex work is real work."

Fortson said they have been receiving messages showing online stalking, harassment and death threats. The Corvallis School Board did condem the hate speech Fortson has been recieving.

Board member Vincent Adams said the overall lesson to be learned from this, is to be respectful online. "Consider how what you intend to say might impact a child," Adams said.
