CORVALLIS, Ore. -- A man was arrested after two suspicious fires in Corvallis over the weekend.

Donald Freeman Jr., 51, faces 18 charges, including arson and assaulting officers.

Police and fire crews responded to the first fire around 2 a.m. Sunday. The initial fire was outside of a home on NW 29th Street. It caused minor damage and no one was injured. While on the scene, responders located a person of interest and found a second fire inside a home on NW 30th Street. Officials said the second fire caused extensive damage to the home. Both of the fires are still under investigation.

KEZI 9 News spoke with neighbors on both NW 29th Street andNW 30th Street. One person who lives near the home on NW 30th Street said an older woman and her son live in the home. The neighbor woke up to see the windows glowing and called the Corvallis Fire Department.

Jesse Lawler, another neighbor, said this is unusual for his neighborhood. "We don't have a lot of, you know, houses that look like they got blown up or anything like that," he said. "I mean, it's on the border of the college neighborhood, so every now and then, there'll be some Friday or Saturday night parties you can hear, but this would definitely be above and beyond that."

According to Benton County Jail officials, Freeman will face a judge for the first time Monday afternoon, which is when he'll learn what he's officially charged with.

Freeman could also enter a plea, indicating whether he admits to the crimes or if he plans to fight the charges.
