Corvallis firefighters participate in structure burn training

Douglas Baily, the division chief with the department, said the training offered hands-on experience which will be valuable when they're out in the field in a real fire.

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- For the first time in nine years, the Corvallis Fire Department conducted a controlled burn training exercise on a structure.

About 25 firefighters and volunteer firefighters took part in the day-long training Monday. The training took place at a city-owned property located near Bald Hill Natural Area. They worked on a number of skills, like entering a structure, pump and hose operations and decontamination procedures after the job is done.

Douglas Baily, the division chief with the department, told KEZI the training offered hands-on experience which will be valuable when they're out in the field in a real fire.

"This is really an opportunity for them to broaden their skills,” Baily said. “We have a burn prop at our drill tower, at our training center. But it's not the same because you're more observing fire behavior than up actually dragging a hose through, up, down and working as a crew."

Baily said it is rare to get to do this type of training because most empty homes owned by the city are too close to other homes.

He said they hope to do this type of training in the future. But until then, they plan on doing their regular monthly training in their training tower.
