OTTER ROCK, Ore. -- A Corvallis doctor died while surfing near Devils Punchbowl this weekend.
Oregon State Police said at about 3:30 Saturday afternoon, they received a 911 call reporting that Toren Stearns, 30, was in water and in distress near Otter Rock State Park, just north of Newport.
Police said the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched a cutter boat and rescue helicopter to assist in the rescue. A local surfer also went into the water to help. A rescue swimmer recovered Stearns and brought him onto the beach.
Stearns was transported by helicopter to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, where he later died.
Stearns had left his dog on the beach while he was surfing and the animal was cared for by the Lincoln County Animal Shelter while notification to his family was made.
Oregon State Police was assisted by Depoe Bay Fire and Rescue, U.S. Coast Guard, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and Lincoln County Animal Shelter.
