CORVALLIS, Ore. -- The Corvallis City Council hosted a public hearing Monday to get community feedback about expanding or replacing the current option levy that will expire soon.

Currently, the levy pays for additional hours at the pool and library, positions at the police and fire department and additional planning.
In total, it costs $4 million a year. That means on average, each household pays about $250 dollars a year in additional taxes.

The current levy will expire in June of 2019, and the city is trying to come up with a new plan, so the funding for those additional services doesn't disappear.

If the city chooses to expand the levy, they can offer additional services, but it could cost taxpayers more. If the city chooses to replace it, taxpayer rates could stay the same but the city will have to reevaluate which services they can provide.

City Manager Mark Shepard said they want community feedback as they craft a new plan before it goes to a vote in November.

"Well, we do know the city council has expressed an interest in some significant public safety issues we have at the police department regarding our police officers on 12-hour shifts, our fire department not being able to respond to fires in a timely way because of staffing shortages," Shepard said. "So we know that is important for the city council and also for the community."

The city council will take community feedback into consideration when they begin crafting the new levy in their work session on Thursday.

"The levy is going to be a key piece of the city being able to provide services that the community has really come to expect us to provide for them," Shepard said.
