Prosecutor: Coquille hammer attack suspect tried to hurt three others

COQUILLE, Ore. – Charges have been filed against a Coquille man accused of striking another man in the head with a hammer.

Richard Dockery has been charged with 11 counts of attempted murder, assault, menacing and unlawful use of a weapon. He will be arraigned in court on Friday morning.

Prosecutors said Dockery tried to kill Dan Navarro when he hit him in the head with a hammer at Four Seasons Inn in Coquille Wednesday afternoon. They said he also assaulted or tried to hurt Wayne Thompson Jr., Jim Schrader and Marlin Christensen when they intervened in the attack.

Navarro is currently in serious condition at Riverbend Hospital in Springfield.

Authorities said Dockery and Navarro didn’t know each other, and they don’t know the reason for the assault.

Dockery was arrested Thursday morning after a manhunt that lasted more than 12 hours.
